Allergies... What’s the Problem?

Allergies are the 6th leading cause of chronic illness in the U.S. with an annual cost in excess of $18 billion. More than 50 million Americans suffer from allergies each year.

Allergies are an overreaction of the immune system to substances that generally do not affect other individuals. These substances, or allergens, can cause sneezing, coughing and itching. Allergic reactions range from merely bothersome to life-threatening. Some allergies are seasonal, like hay fever. Allergies have also been associated with chronic conditions like sinusitis and asthma.

When do you come see us?
  • You have any respiratory illness that lasts longer than a week or two
  • wheezing or difficulty breathing
  • swelling of the lips, tongue or mouth
  • chest pain, tightness or deep chest cough
  • hives, itchy skin, or joint swelling

Why should you get treatment?
Waiting for your allergies to go away probably won’t help. Most allergies get worse rather than better without proper diagnosis and treatment, and treatment for allergies can help you feel better. Some people avoid treating allergies for fear medication will make them sleepy. There are many allergy prescription medications that can help control your allergy symptoms without making you sleepy.
